How do you say it in Spanish?

    What you need to know

    • You tell time with the verb ser and the article: es la una in the singular, and son las dos, son las tres in the plural. English just says "it's" every time.
    • Up to half past, you add the minutes with y (y cuarto, y media). After that, you count what's left to the next hour: son las cinco menos cuarto in Spain, un cuarto para las cinco in Latin America.
    • To say when something happens, use a las: la clase es a las ocho. To ask the time, ¿Qué hora es?, in the singular.

Telling time in Spanish: common questions

Why es la una but son las dos?

Because una is singular and agrees with hora: es la una. From two on, it's plural: son las dos, son las diez. The same goes for a la una and a las dos.

How do you say 7:45 in Spanish?

In Spain, son las ocho menos cuarto. In Mexico and much of Latin America, es un cuarto para las ocho. Son las siete y cuarenta y cinco is also correct, but it sounds more like reading a digital clock.

What's the difference between ¿qué hora es? and ¿a qué hora?

¿Qué hora es? asks the time right now, and the answer is son las…. ¿A qué hora…? asks when something happens, and the answer is a las…: ¿A qué hora abre el banco? A las nueve.
