    • Ll and y sound the same in most countries, like the y in "yes" (with a sh sound in Argentina and Uruguay), and ch always sounds like the ch in "church," as in chico.

    Alphabet in Spanish: common questions

How many letters are in the Spanish alphabet?

There are 27: the 26 letters of the English alphabet plus ñ. Ch and ll counted as letters until the 2010 Ortografía, when they started being treated as digraphs, two letters with a single sound. You still write them the same way.

What are v, w and y called in Spanish?

The names the RAE recommends are uve, uve doble and ye. The other names are still correct and very common in Latin America: ve corta (or ve chica) for v, doble ve or doble u for w, and i griega for y.

Do ll and y sound the same in Spanish?

In most of Latin America and Spain, yes: pollo (chicken) and poyo (stone bench) sound alike. In Argentina and Uruguay both sound like the "sh" in "show" or the "s" in "measure": calle, yo. A few areas, such as Paraguay and parts of the Andes, still keep the two sounds apart.
