How do you say it in Spanish?

    What you need to know

    • In the future and the conditional, the ending goes on the whole infinitive and is the same for all three verb groups: hablaré, comeré, viviré and hablaría, comería, viviría.
    • Only 12 verbs change their stem, and the stem is the same in both tenses: tener becomes tendré, tendría, hacer becomes haré, haría and decir becomes diré, diría.
    • The conditional is for polite requests, advice and hypotheses (si tuviera dinero, viajaría). And "when I have" is cuando tenga, never the future.

Future tense in Spanish: common questions

Which verbs are irregular in the Spanish future tense?

There are 12: poder, saber, querer, haber and caber drop the e (podré); tener, poner, salir, venir and valer swap the vowel for a d (tendré); and decir and hacer shorten (diré, haré). The same stem works for the conditional.

What's the difference between the future and the conditional?

The future (hablaré) is "I will speak": plans, predictions and promises. The conditional (hablaría) is "I would speak": polite requests, advice and hypotheses (si pudiera, iría).

Do people actually use the future tense when they talk?

Less than in writing. For plans, most speakers say ir a + infinitive: Voy a llamar a mi mamá. The simple future shows up in promises (Te llamaré), in more formal speech and for guessing about the present: ¿Dónde estará Ana? (I wonder where Ana is).
