How do you say it in Spanish?

    What you need to know

    • Unlike in English, a Spanish adjective agrees with its noun: adjectives ending in -o change in the feminine (alto, alta), those ending in -e or a consonant usually don't (feliz), and the plural of feliz is felices.
    • Before a singular noun, some adjectives get shorter (un buen día, una gran ciudad, el primer piso), but the feminine of primero stays whole (la primera vez).
    • To compare, use más… que, menos… que and tan… como. Never say "más mejor" (it's mucho mejor) or "muy buenísimo" (just buenísimo).

    Adjectives in Spanish: common questions

How do you make adjectives plural in Spanish?

After a vowel, add -s (alto, altos). After a consonant, add -es (azul, azules). And z changes to c: feliz, felices. In English the adjective never changes, so this is easy to forget.

    Buen or bueno?

Buen goes before a masculine singular noun (un buen libro). After the noun, and in the feminine, it stays whole: un libro bueno, una buena idea. The same goes for malo, primero and tercero. Gran is different: it gets shorter in the feminine too (una gran idea).

How do you compare with adjectives in Spanish?

Use más or menos + adjective + que: Lima es más grande que Cusco. For "as … as," use tan + adjective + como: Ana es tan alta como su hermana. Four adjectives have their own forms: mejor (better), peor (worse), mayor (older) and menor (younger).
