How do you say it in Spanish?

    What you need to know

    • Almost every irregular verb falls into a group: e→ie (quiero), o→ue (puedo), e→i (pido), yo-go verbs (tengo, salgo) and -zco verbs (conozco).
    • With the boot rule, nosotros and vosotros keep the original stem: puedo, but podemos.
    • In the preterite, the most common verbs have their own stem (tuve, hice, dije, estuve, pude), and ser and ir share the same forms: fui, fue, fueron.

Irregular verbs in Spanish: common questions

What are irregular verbs in Spanish?

They are verbs that change their stem or ending when you conjugate them: tener becomes tengo, poder becomes puedo, ir becomes voy. Almost all of them follow a few patterns, so you can learn them in groups.

    What is the boot rule?

In stem-changing verbs, the change happens in yo, tú, él and ellos, but not in nosotros and vosotros. If you shade the forms that change in a conjugation chart, they make the shape of a boot: puedo, puedes, puede, pueden, but podemos, podéis.

Why are fui, fue and fueron both ser and ir?

In the preterite, ser and ir share exactly the same forms: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fueron. Context tells them apart: Fui al mercado (I went) is ir, and Fue un buen día (it was) is ser. If a place follows with a, it's almost always ir.
