How do you say it in Spanish?

    What you need to know

    • The stem stays put and only the ending changes. In the present, -ar verbs take -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an, and -er and -ir verbs take -o, -es, -e. Those two only split in nosotros (comemos, vivimos) and vosotros.
    • In the preterite, the accent changes everything (trabajo is present, trabajó is past). The -ar imperfect is spelled with a b (estudiaba), and the future ends in -é (llamaré).
    • Don't go by how a verb looks: subir and consumir are regular (sube, consume), and busqué and leyó only change their spelling.

Regular verbs in Spanish: common questions

How can I tell if a Spanish verb is regular?

Conjugate three forms: the yo of the present, the él of the preterite and the yo of the future. If all three follow the pattern (trabajo, trabajó, trabajaré), the verb is regular. Don't go by how a verb looks: pensar is stem-changing (pienso).

    Why vivimos and not vivemos?

Because with -ir verbs, nosotros ends in -imos: vivimos, escribimos, recibimos. The -emos ending belongs to -er verbs (comemos). Since -er and -ir verbs share almost every other ending, it's one of the most common mistakes.

Is there a printable regular verbs worksheet?

Yes. The exercises on this page print with the answer key, in the present and the past. The interactive practice above corrects you right away, explains each answer and plays the whole sentence.
